At first, Season 1 of Wistoria: Wand & Sword felt a bit slow, especially during the setup. I also tend not to like protagonists who are too passive and don't really react. I prefer characters with grayer shades, more human, with real emotions.
But as the story went on, it revealed that Will doesn't actually accept being looked down upon. He's just trying to prove himself and gain acceptance. During the school event, Will showed what he could really do, like taking Julius down. After that, the other characters started revealing their own backstories, explaining why they carried such toxic feelings, and gradually began cheering Will on.
Season 2 was much better. It opened with Professor Edward being incredibly harsh, setting exam questions about how magic actually works. Will, who at that point still believed he had no magic, failed as expected. (laughs) He lost a credit, so he couldn't head to the Tower yet.
But after the New Year's invasion, Will finally showed his real power, using his 'Wis' ability to fight and help others. The buildup was really well paced. Losty sacrificed himself to save Will and the professor, but it turned out Losty was just a clone of Elfie, so no one actually died. After that, Will gained a lot more acceptance and finally got to go to the Tower.
Even at the Tower, Will still had to prove himself. (laughs) His power is that of a 'Witch' who absorbs magic from others, so he can't be initiated into the traditional mage system, and the High Council wouldn't accept him. So Will had to go prove himself all over again, train, and come back to show what he could do. In the end, it all worked out.
Overall, I think Season 2 was really well done, especially after the long setup in Season 1. I started to like Will a lot more. It's an anime worth watching. I'd give it a 9 out of 10, docking a little because the character depth still isn't quite there for me. Season 3 has been announced, but there's no air date yet since the manga is monthly, so it takes a long time. I'll keep following it.
